In January, I had the pleasure of DJ’ing for Ben and Sammy Leabeau. The ceremony took place in a beautiful hall at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Tempe, AZ. As usual, I arrived 2 hours before to setup. The dance floor was large (30 ft x 40 ft), so I setup on one side and placed my lights on the other side of the dance floor.
My first mistake was because of the large dance floor, I should have made two changes to my setup. First, instead of placing both sets of speakers next to one the same side of the dance floor, I should have split them up and placed one set on the other side. This would have distributed the sound much better for a fuller sound.
Secondly, instead of using my full truss system, I should have used 2 T-bars on opposite sides of the dance floor. This would have accomplished two things: 1) it would have allowed the lights to project and cover more of the dance floor; and 2) the T-bars would have been placed in the corners vs. right on the side like where the truss was placed.
I am actually DJ’ing another wedding in this same location in April, and will make these changes and report on whether or not they made a positive change. Other than these details, the wedding was a big hit! The dance floor was packed the entire night as I played a wide variety of music to include Rock & Roll, Motown, R&B, old school Hip Hop, and upbeat dance music.
